As Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Dan oversees a broad array of activities encompassing financial planning, analysis, operations, and compliance. Departments that come under his direct management include the controller’s office, budgets and financial planning, risk management and audit services, treasury management, sponsored programs administration, and financial systems solutions.
Dan was named Vice President in October 2008 and had worked as acting chief financial officer since May 2008. Prior to that Dan worked as Director of Budgets and Financial Planning for five years, during which time oversaw efforts to substantially improve the capabilities and capacity of the budget office. Under his direction, the budget office has played a critical role in planning efforts relating to the University’s expansion in Allston, continued programmatic and physical planning on the Cambridge and Longwood campuses, and fundraising initiatives relating to both.
Dan has served in various leadership roles within the Finance and University communities, including Chair of the University’s Project Review Committee (which evaluates the business cases and project plans for major institutional IT initiatives); co-Chair of the Executive Committee overseeing the University’s efforts to implement a new enterprise financial planning tool; co-Chair of the Financial Deans Forum (in which School chief financial officers and Central Administration Finance leadership gather to discuss key issues); and member of the Greenhouse Gas Task Force convened by President Faust to make recommendations regarding the University’s strategy to reduce its carbon emissions.
Before joining Harvard, Dan was as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. At McKinsey, he helped clients address critical business issues in industries including higher education, technology and consumer products. Prior to working at McKinsey, Dan had been an attorney with Nutter, McClennen & Fish, LLP, working in the Firm's Business Department and specializing in securities offerings and mergers and acquisitions.
Dan received his MBA from UVA's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. He also earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law with Magna Cum Laude honors and graduated with honors from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology.
